  • Made for hands, not the whole body. Built for the skin on the backs of a working man's knuckles — nothing like the skin anywhere else.
  • Absorbs in 90 seconds. Whipped beef tallow mirrors the oil his own skin makes, so it sinks in instead of sitting on top. No grease, no slip on his tools.
  • Four ingredients. That's the list. Whipped beef tallow + raw honey + cold-pressed olive oil + pot marigold. Read it on the back.
  • He won't smell like your hand cream. Just a faint, natural scent that fades in a minute — no synthetic "fragrance," no perfume counter.
  • The Rough Hands Promise. If his hands don't feel different in 30 days, send the tin back — even empty. Full refund, we pay the postage.

THE ROUGH HANDS PROMISE

If his hands don't feel different in 30 days, send it back.

Give it to him, let him use it for thirty days, and if his hands don't feel any different — send the tin back, even if it's empty. We'll pay the return postage and refund you in full. No questions, no forms. One email, and we'll sort it.

— The Gift He'd Never Buy Himself

You've seen what those hands have done over the years.

He's been working with his hands his whole life. Building, fixing, fastening, lifting. And his hands show it — split knuckles every spring, dry cracked skin he just wipes on his trousers and gets on with.

He'd never buy himself a hand balm. He's not one for fuss, and "skincare" isn't a word in his vocabulary. Which is exactly why he'll never sort this out himself — and exactly why it makes the kind of gift that quietly says I noticed, and I care.

You don't have to say it out loud. You can hand it over in a kraft box.

— Sound Familiar?

His hands tell the story he never will.

  • His knuckles split every spring — and every autumn. He calls it "just one of those things."
  • He's been wiping his hands on his trousers since 1985. He's not about to start a skincare routine now.
  • He'd never tell you they hurt. So you noticed for him.

He's not one for fuss. Which is exactly why he'll never sort this out himself.

— What's In It

Four ingredients. That's the entire list.

Whipped beef tallow

Whipped beef tallow

The active ingredient. Closely mirrors the oil his own skin makes, so it sinks in instead of sitting on top. Naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E and K.

Raw honey

Raw honey

A natural humectant that pulls moisture into the skin, with antibacterial properties used for healing since ancient times.

Cold-pressed olive oil

Cold-pressed olive oil

A light, skin-loving oil rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. It softens rough skin and helps the balm spread thin and absorb fast.

Pot marigold (calendula)

Pot marigold

Calendula — a traditional botanical long used to calm and soothe dry, cracked, irritated skin. No synthetic fragrance, just a faint natural scent.

No petroleum. No parabens. No phthalates. No "fragrance." No fillers. No water — so no preservatives needed. Read it on the back and compare it to anything on the chemist's shelf.

— How He'll Use It

It fits into his day, not the other way round.

1

A fingertip is enough

No big ritual. A small amount warmed between his hands covers both.

2

Rub it into the cracks

Backs of the hands, knuckles, fingertips — wherever the skin splits.

3

Absorbs in 90 seconds

No grease, no slip. He can pick his tools straight back up.

4

Once or twice a day

After washing or before bed. Any natural scent is gone in a minute.

A 60g tin lasts most men six to eight weeks. No habit to change. He won't even feel like he's "doing skincare."

— Why Not Just Any Tallow Balm?

Made for one job. His hands. Nothing else.

Tallow is having a moment, and the shelf is filling up with balms that promise to do everything — face, body, lips, hands, even the dog. A balm made for everything is made for nothing in particular.

We made one product, for one job. Because the skin on the back of a working man's knuckles is nothing like the skin anywhere else — and it deserves a balm built for it.

Face, body, lips, hair, baby, dog crossed out. One word circled: HANDS.

— What To Expect

His hands across the first month.

Day 1

It actually sinks in

Gone in 90 seconds — no greasy film, so he picks his tools or his brew straight back up. By bedtime his hands already feel less tight and raw.

Week 1

The stinging stops

The splits stop catching and biting. Washing up, cement, cold air on the walk to the van — none of it makes him wince the way it used to.

Weeks 2–3

The deep cracks close over

The splits at the base of his thumb and across the knuckles — the ones that crack and bleed every spring and autumn — start to heal and stay closed.

Week 4+

Sandpaper turns smooth

No cracking, no bleeding, no wincing — hands that finally feel like his own again. The tin lives by the kettle now, and he swears by it.

He actually said something
Four years of socks and ties. This year I gave him this and a month later he rang to say his hands feel decent for once.
Emma C., 4 days ago
His knuckles have stopped cracking
Builder husband, hands wrecked Oct–April. Three weeks of this and the cracks closed up. Keeps it by the kettle.
Hannah R., 5 days ago
Didn't think he was the hand-cream type
Dad's a retired electrician, allotment most days. It's on his windowsill now and he asked where to get more.
Claire M., 1 week ago
It actually sinks in
Chemist creams sit on top and he won't touch them at work. This one's gone in by the time he's picked the spanner up.
Rebecca T., 1 week ago
Looked like a proper gift
Didn't want something that looked like it came from a pharmacy. The kraft box is lovely — didn't even need to wrap it.
Donna F., 2 weeks ago
Smoother than they've been in years
Sceptical about beef fat in a tin, but his mechanic's hands are the smoothest in years. Bought two so I can nick one.
Mark T., 2 weeks ago
The smell sold me
Not floral, just clean — gone in a minute. I'd never have used a "hand cream" but this doesn't feel like one.
Gemma L., 3 weeks ago
Bought one for Dad, kept one
Arrived fast, beautifully boxed. Dad loves it and honestly my own hands have never been softer. Will reorder.
Andrew K., 1 week ago
Game changer for cracked hands
I'm a joiner and my hands take a battering all winter. Tried everything from Vaseline to the yellow tin. This is the only one that's actually cleared the splits round my thumbnails. Sceptical about beef tallow but it works.
Sarah J., 1 week ago
Bought for my husband, he's converted
He laughed when it turned up ("beef fat?") but two weeks on he's the one reminding me to reorder. Hands aren't bleeding any more.
Lorraine P., 2 weeks ago
Does the job, wish the tin was bigger
Works really well on my dad's gardener hands. Only gripe is it goes down quicker than I'd like if you use it twice a day. Will buy again though.
Dave M., 2 weeks ago
Better than O'Keeffe's
Used O'Keeffe's for years. This sinks in faster and hasn't got that medicated smell. My knuckles have healed over for the first time in ages.
Kelly R., 2 weeks ago
Finally something he'll use
My partner's a mechanic and refuses anything "girly". No perfume in this so he actually keeps it in the van. His hands look human again.
Megan T., 3 weeks ago
Lovely texture, not greasy
Expected something heavy given it's tallow but it melts in and absorbs really fast. No greasy residue on the phone or the steering wheel.
Priya S., 3 weeks ago
Good, takes a couple of weeks
Not an instant fix, but my dry, eczema-prone hands have calmed right down with daily use. Glad I stuck with it.
Charlotte W., 3 weeks ago
My dad rang to say thanks
He NEVER comments on presents. Rang me up to say his hands hadn't felt this good in years. Worth every penny.
Nicola B., 4 weeks ago
Smells of next to nothing — perfect
Husband hates scented stuff. This has the faintest natural smell that's gone in a minute. He's using it every day, which never happens.
Lee H., 4 weeks ago
Cracked fingertips gone
Plasterer here. The cracks on my fingertips that split open every job have healed up. First cream that's kept up with the work.
Janet C., 1 month ago
Works well, lid a bit stiff
Really pleased with how it's helped my husband's hands. The tin lid can be stiff to open with sore hands, but that's a small thing.
Sophie R., 1 month ago
Bought two, kept one for myself
Got it for my dad and pinched the second tin. My own hands from gardening are so much softer. Both of us delighted.
Gary W., 1 month ago
No more bleeding knuckles in winter
Every winter my hands split and bleed. A month of this and they've stayed closed even working outdoors. Genuinely impressed.
Hayley D., 1 month ago
A proper gift
Looked lovely in the box, didn't need wrapping, and it actually does what it says. Dad keeps it by his chair now.
Emma F., 1 month ago
Solid, would recommend
Took a little while to notice, but my partner's rough hands are noticeably softer. Nice that it's only a few ingredients.

Raw honey and whipped tallow — the heritage recipe
— Our Story

We started by looking for one good thing.

Margot & June was founded by two women who got tired of looking. Looking for a hand balm strong enough for the men in their lives — fathers who'd worked with their hands for forty years, partners who came home from the building site with knuckles that wouldn't stop cracking.

Every cream on the shelf was either full of petroleum and parabens, or smelled like a perfume counter, or simply didn't work. So we went back to an older idea — beef tallow and raw honey, used to heal cracked working hands for generations, from Egypt to medieval Europe.

We chose to make one product, for one job. Four ingredients, and nothing else. Same formula since day one. It works because it's pure — and it stays pure.

— Common Questions

You asked. We answered.

Will my dad / partner actually use it?
This is the one everyone asks. A fingertip is enough, it absorbs in 90 seconds with no grease or slip, and the scent fades in a minute — so it doesn't feel like "doing skincare." That's why men who "never use hand cream" tend to keep this one by the kettle.
Is tallow not a bit… odd?
It sounds unusual, but it's one of the oldest skincare ingredients there is. Beef tallow's molecular structure closely mirrors the oil skin makes naturally, so it sinks in instead of sitting on top — and it's naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E and K. Properly rendered, it has a faint, neutral, warm scent — nothing like raw meat.
What does it smell like?
A faint, natural scent — clean, not floral, not "spa." Properly rendered tallow with honey, olive oil and a little marigold has a mild, warm, neutral smell that fades within about a minute. No synthetic fragrance, so he won't smell like a perfume counter.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It's about as simple as a balm gets: four ingredients, no water, no preservatives, no synthetic fragrance, no parabens. That makes it suitable for most sensitive skin — but as with anything, patch-test first if his skin reacts easily.
How long does one tin last?
A 60g tin lasts most men six to eight weeks with daily use on the hands. A little goes a long way once it's warmed between the fingers.
Will it work on badly cracked, splitting hands?
That's exactly what it's built for. Beef tallow mirrors the oils skin makes naturally, so it sinks into the deep splits at the knuckles and the base of the thumb instead of sitting on top. Used daily, even hands that crack and bleed every winter tend to settle and heal over within a few weeks — and if his don't feel different in 30 days, that's what The Rough Hands Promise is for.
What if it's not for him?
That's what The Rough Hands Promise is for. Thirty days, even an empty tin, we pay the return postage and refund you in full. One email, no forms.
